Button Up

At Terrakon, we are conversion minded.

A website, or landing page can be beautiful, breathtaking and bring a tear to one’s eye- but if it doesn’t convert, all that emotional strife may be for nothing.  If you want your site or landing page to convert, you have to be of the philosophy that you must tell your visitors what to do, and how to act.  [I have used the metaphor before, lead the horse to water and tell it how to drink.]

However, some businesses choose to use graphic designers to design their site – who are less conversion-minded and instead prefer to design something that looks amazing and flippantly artful.   As a result, they don’t like buttons.  We, in the internet marketing world call them call to actions and they are a HUGE

part of conversion success.  We understand the need to call the visitor to action.

Maybe buttons aren’t the sexiest element out there, but nonetheless they are important.  So don’t let your graphic designer let you go button-less.  I will admit, buttons can certainly ugly up a page if too large, too colorful, or too in your face. But I will also admit, that often, these kinds of buttons…work. Adding buttons or calls to action on not only your landing page but throughout your website can help increase conversions and conversion rates exponentially.

We have found that buttons, and also trust elements (BBB logos, certifications, etc.) can help to increase conversions anywhere from a couple percentage points, to 30% or more.

Buttoning Up Tips:

  1. Add multiple buttons throughout your website
  2. Place your buttons above the fold.
  3. Make your buttons a different color from other site elements.  Depending on the number and types of buttons you have, you can also make all call to actions a consistent color to assist from a usability standpoint.
  4. Be precise in the verbiage you’re using on your buttons, don’t just say, “Submit,” but rather, ‘Get your Free Sample Now’.
  5. Wherever there is a button, there is a form to be filled out. Be sure to send customer’s confirmation pages/emails confirming you have received their information and how to contact you with questions.
  6. Be sure to make your call to action a button, or button-like. Some prefer to use text link calls to action that don’t necessarily have the same effect as regular buttons.  Make them nice and 3D with rollover effects – make them fun to click, and visitors will more likely click them.

Buttoning up is not difficult, your graphic designers should be able to create a unique button in about 2 minutes or less, and programmers can program them to a site in about the same amount of time. They’re a great way to increase conversions and conversion rates for your PPC account.

  1. Conversion is the name of the game and it is certainly a lost art.

Often, website owners think they want better rankings in Google or more traffic when in reality they want more leads or sales.
